The Alkaline Diet

Hello Blog World!

On Monday, I am going to start a 3-4 month "diet" called the Alkaline Diet and want to blog my journey on here- recipes, health info, etc. I thought this blog might help keep myself accountable since I know cheeseburgers and milkshakes will be taunting me haha.

What is an Alkaline Diet?
A diet with little to no acidic foods. The current typical Western diet is composed of many acid forming foods (proteins, cereals, sugars, coffee, etc). With this alkaline diet, you will eat alkaline producing foods such as vegetables, whole grains, fish, eggs, etc. With close adherence to the diet, balance within the body's pH can be accomplished in 2-3 months. At that time, a normal diet can be resumed.

What is the purpose?
To restore balance in intestinal flora. Due to diet, lifestyle, medications, etc, this has become out of balance. Acid foods don't make your body acidic, they prevent your body from eliminating acid waste.

What does too much acid (Acidosis) do to the body?
Research shoes that unless the body's pH level is slightly alkaline, the body cannot heal itself. If your body's pH isn't balanced, it has a much harder time absorbing vitamins, minerals, and food supplements. Excess waste causes organ dysfunction, which can lead to illnesses including asthma, allergies, eczema, migraines, arthritis, insomnia, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, cancer, and many others.

The (very basic) science behind food's acidity:
A Food's acid or alkaline forming tendency in the body has nothing to do with the actual pH of the food itself. For example, meet will test alkaline before digestion but it leaves acidic residue in the body. Likewise, lemons are very acidic, yet they are alkaline forming in the body. This is because the food is oxidized to form water, carbon dioxide, and an inorganic compound. The alkaline and acidic nature of the inorganic compound formed determines whether the food is alkaline or acid producing. If it has more sodium, potassium, or calcium- it is classified as an alkaline food. If it has more sulphur, phosphate, or chloride- it is classified as an acid food.
